How do I create custom dimensions in GA4?

In order to display many of the parameters that we can select in the integration in GA4, we need to create them in GA4. We do this by creating custom dimensions for our matelso parameters. Our matelso parameters refer to parameters that are not included in GA4 by default. We take parameters from our standard variable preset as examples. Here, the parameters “value”, “currency”, “page_title” or “page_location” are already available in GA4. The other parameters such as “Call_status”, “Call_label” and “Call_length” are not yet available in GA4. The same applies to other call-related parameters in our integration. These parameters are foreign to Google and must be created in the custom dimensions.

Before we create our custom dimensions, our Matelso parameters must be entered once in the events in GA4. To do this, our event simply needs to be triggered once. To do this, you can either call the call tracking numbers yourself or wait until a customer calls. It can take up to 24 hours for the parameters to be displayed in GA4.

This guide explains how to create custom dimensions. As an example, we will use the Matelso GA4 integration parameter “Call_status”

1. navigate to the “Custom Definitions” #

  • Click on “Manage” in the lower left menu

  • Then scroll to “Data display” under the property settings

  • Select “Custom definitions”.

2. add user-defined dimension #

  • Click on the “Create custom dimension” button

  • Fill in the required fields as follows:

    • Dimension name: Give the dimension a descriptive name, e.g. “Item category” or “User role”.
    • Description: (Optional) Describe what this dimension measures.
    • Scope: Select whether the dimension is applied at event level (Event) or user level (User). For our matelso parameters, we use the event level
    • Event parameter: Specifies the name of the parameter used for this dimension. This should match the parameters created in our integration. For our example, we use “Call_status”.

Once the custom dimensions have been created, we can also start creating reports with you. However, it can take between 24-48 hours for the data to be displayed in these reports.
